What Is Clinical Research?
Clinical trials are carefully designed research studies involving volunteers. They help researchers determine whether potential new medications, treatments, diagnostic tools, and approaches to care are safe and effective.
Before a new treatment can become widely available, it must go through a rigorous research and regulatory process. Clinical trial participants play an essential role in that process.
Every study follows a detailed research plan, called a protocol, that establishes who may participate, what evaluations are performed, how participants are monitored, and how researchers collect information about the investigational treatment.
Participation is always voluntary.

Alzheimer’s Disease & Memory
Research opportunities may be available for people at different stages of Alzheimer’s disease—from individuals without noticeable symptoms who may be at increased risk, to those experiencing memory changes or diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease.
Current studies also include research addressing behavioral symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease, including hallucinations and delusions.

What Can I Expect as a Research Participant?
Every clinical trial is different, but we want every participant to understand the process before deciding whether research is right for them.
1. Connect With Our Team
You can contact us directly or submit your information online. You do not need to know which study you qualify for.
Our research team can help identify opportunities that may be appropriate.
2. Complete an Initial Pre-Screening
A member of our team will ask some basic questions about your health, diagnosis, symptoms, medications, and medical history.
This helps us determine whether a current study might be a potential match.
3. Learn About the Study
If a study may be appropriate, we will explain its purpose, investigational treatment, visit schedule, study procedures, potential risks and benefits, and other important information.
You will have time to ask questions and discuss participation with your family or healthcare providers.
4. Make an Informed Decision
Before any study-specific procedures are performed, you will review an informed consent form with our research team.
Participating is your choice. Contacting us or learning about a study does not obligate you to enroll.
5. Screening & Study Participation
After consent, study-specific testing determines whether you meet all eligibility requirements.
If eligible and enrolled, our team will guide you through your scheduled visits, assessments, treatment, and follow-up throughout the study.
Participant Care at NDx
Research With the Individual in Mind
Clinical research is highly structured—but we never want participation to feel impersonal.
Depending on the study, your visits may include physician evaluations, memory or neurologic assessments, laboratory testing, diagnostic procedures, imaging, questionnaires, investigational medication or infusions, and other study-related care.
Our team coordinates these requirements and helps you prepare for each visit.
Study-required medications, procedures, and evaluations are generally provided at no cost to participants. Compensation for time and travel may also be available depending on the individual study.
Before you enroll, we will explain what your particular study covers, what participation requires, and whether compensation or travel assistance is available.

Several investigational programs in which our site participated have gone on to result in FDA-approved therapies.

2016 | Nuplazid®
Pimavanserin — Parkinson’s Disease Psychosis
NDx participated in the clinical development of pimavanserin, which became the first FDA-approved medication specifically indicated for the treatment of hallucinations and delusions associated with Parkinson’s disease psychosis.
The FDA approved Nuplazid in 2016, providing an important new treatment option for individuals experiencing these challenging symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
2019 | Dayvigo®
Lemborexant — Insomnia
NDx participated in clinical research involving lemborexant prior to its FDA approval.
In 2019, Dayvigo® received FDA approval for the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulties with sleep onset and/or sleep maintenance.
The program represents another example of research conducted at NDx contributing to the clinical development of a therapy that ultimately became available to patients.
2020 | Nurtec ODT®
Rimegepant — Migraine
NDx participated in clinical research evaluating rimegepant during its development as a treatment for migraine.
In 2020, Nurtec ODT® received FDA approval for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults.
Its approval added a new treatment option for people living with migraine and marked another clinical development program to which NDx and our research participants contributed.
2024 | Kisunla®
Donanemab — Alzheimer’s Disease
One of the most significant examples of NDx's research involvement is our participation in Eli Lilly's pivotal TRAILBLAZER-ALZ 2 Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating donanemab in early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease.
NDx enrolled 39 participants and, according to our site performance records, was the #2 enrolling site in the United States for the study.
In July 2024, the FDA approved donanemab under the brand name Kisunla® for Alzheimer’s disease. Treatment is initiated in individuals with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia stage of disease—the population studied in the pivotal clinical trial.
For our team and the participants and families who made the research possible, this milestone demonstrates the real-world impact clinical trial participation can have.
2025 | Atzumi®
Dihydroergotamine — Acute Migraine
NDx also participated in clinical research involving dihydroergotamine during the development of what ultimately became Atzumi®.
In 2025, Atzumi® was FDA approved as a nasal powder for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults.
Why Participate in a Clinical Trial?
People participate in clinical research for many different reasons.
For some, it is an opportunity to access investigational research that is not otherwise available. For others, it is an opportunity to take a more active role in their healthcare or receive additional study-related evaluations and monitoring.
Many participants also choose research because they want to contribute to something larger.
The information collected from today's volunteers helps researchers better understand neurologic diseases, determine whether investigational treatments are safe and effective, and develop the therapies that may become options for future generations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a diagnosis to contact NDx?
No. Eligibility requirements vary considerably between studies. Some trials require an established diagnosis, while others specifically seek individuals with early symptoms or people who have not developed symptoms at all.
You don't need to determine your eligibility yourself. Our team can help.
Does participating cost anything?
Study-required medications, evaluations, and procedures are provided at no cost to participants.
Will I be paid to participate?
Compensation for time and travel may be available and varies by study. Any compensation will be explained before you decide whether to participate.
Will I receive the investigational medication?
Not necessarily. Some studies compare an investigational treatment with a placebo or another treatment. If a study includes a placebo, our team will explain this during the informed consent process.
Can I continue seeing my regular doctor?
Clinical research is not intended to replace your regular medical care, and our team works closey with your doctors to keep your medical team informed. Additionally, the NDx Research Program is open to all volunteers, and it is not required to be a patient of Dr. Vandersluis. Our research team will explain how study participation relates to your existing healthcare and any study-specific requirements.
Can I leave a study after I enroll?
Yes. Clinical trial participation is voluntary. You may choose not to participate or withdraw from a study at any time.
